can anyone tell me how effective for SEO purposes using articles with a backlink on the end of them is?

LOL that's exactly what I was thinking. This person posts a bunch of these "questions" with the same anchor text in various forums. Yet they never reply to the answers or contribute any other way to the forum.

Yes, it is definitely worth the efforts that you put into it. But, it also depends on the quality of the directory that you are submitting your articles to. Also, the article that you are submitting should be unique on the web. There should be no error in the links that you put in the article.If it is than it will definitely bring a negative effect to your site.

Adding the link to the end of article is effective for gaining backlinks to improve SERP for your website. If the article directory allows you to add two links you can cascade your prior website in the second link, doing for every article will theoretically double the amount of links for your sites.

Your article content should be real and if you add the anchor text links in the article,you will get desire result

You need to have good content, i mean of the subject in place. That makes people read it and share it. Also you need to spread the world, maybe in a blog, or in social media. And you will get traffic to your site, if you do have one. If not to your blog, or social profile.
