Web Design & Programming - Best Free Website Services keith - Jun 23, 2004 - 03:03 AM Post subject: Best Free Website Services
Here's a question for everyone...... What would you consider to be the best place to build a free website?
Geocities? Angelfire?
Give us your opinions!

None of the above!
There are many more. Guess what??!!!

Hi,
I think it depends on your knowledge of HTML. For someone with very little knowledge of HTML geocities is great. People that want to add more advanced features to a website or edit in HTML might not like it as much.
I've only tried a couple of free website services in the past so can't really comment on which is the best.
Cheers,

Even that is not necessarily true as their are a few sites made in geocities that are very well designed and rank high in google, one in particular in the top 10 for the keyword "home business". However i do see your point and it is dependant on the developers knowledge of HTML as well as their experience in designing sites in general.

My suggestion would be host.sk (www.host.sk) - they offered free hosting long time ago and people who opened account at then really got it for free... now they have minor $20 one time setup fee, but believe me, it worths much more than that! Server is very fast & stable with no banners, popups, "hosted by" links, with full FTP access, PHP, mySQL, WAP support and what is most important to programmers like I am - full Linux shell access - I dont know any other 'free' server who will give you that. I think its all for 150MB space which should be more than enough for most sites...

Even though the topic was FREE places i visited the host.sk and it is really good, however the price has gone up to $29. It's also a good idea to check with you ISP as it is likely they will provide you with free web space.
vinyl - Jun 25, 2004 - 02:30 PM Post subject:
nice suggestion... its too bad that ISPs often support only plain HTML without any server-side techniques and often give really small amount of MBs without ability to attach your own domain name [not sure if host.sk allows you to have your own domain name because i didnt check it lately, but if they dont support that, i withdraw everything good what i said about them]... but why would they when it just comes as a small gift for opening dialup or other personal account... many people even dont know that they have that networker4u - Jun 26, 2004 - 12:54 AM Post subject:
Why no one is talking about bravnet?
Is it BAD?

No soz just completely forgot. It is a great site though and i used many of their free web tools, the only problem being that some of their tools are very limited unless you subscribe to the premium service. But dont get me wrong they provide brilliant tools.

Kevin,
Although Stone Evans is very smart to have invented the pluginforprofits sites (I'm sure he makes a good amount from them)........ I was more referring to a fully customizable website...... not just a bunch of affiliate programs packed into one site. (which looks the same as hundreds of other sites)
I admire Stone for his ability to sell........
But not really the "free website service" I was referring to........

The only problem with free hosting is: you get what you pay for wealthsystem - Jul 08, 2004 - 06:33 PM Post subject:
Keith the website is fully customizable.
People can do anything they want with it.
Nobody is under any obligation to mantain
the affiliate programs or the look of the
site.

Be careful with FREE websites because you usually get what you pay for! There is a strong possibility of downtime, automatic ads on your site, less control over the site, less professional look, not as many options, etc... They may even up and cancel your site for no reason leaving you with nothing.
Webhosting is pretty darn cheap these days. I would go with a cheap paid service rather than free.

Free web hosts have had a nasty habit of going out of business and leaving you stranded in the past.
Here's one though that seems to be popular:

its the matter of common sense - without money they cannot support so many people - what can they do when they become owercrowded? either put limits, either ask for cash either die with a slow death :]
if you have time to play with it -> http://www.free-webhosts.com/webhosting-01.php - im sure there are plenty of free hosts listed there.

Take the plunge and spend $2 a month to get some basic real hosting, and, of course, get your own domain name too. It's really not that expensive.

i think web designing is a thing to do not to think, regarding web server both are equaly same but one should know his/her requirements only he can judge better one for themself. no doubt every server provides diffrent services, but according to me angelfire is much-much better

Tripod have many adds but i find them good since they have a cgi bin and i havent had many script problems with them apart from advanced scripts. Honestly you could make a good go at a home biz from a free web address. Many have and still do. Its not all to do with unique web addresses or fancy site graphics. A good content page showing you realy know what your talking about and a bit of imagination can get you anywhere on the web. Also you need alot of persistence Duh:)

I think that bravenet.com is great. You don't have to use the FREE hosting since they also provide premium services. Their support is great and they provide many tools.
