Backlinks are a way to get traffic to your site. Promoting your site is different. Both are important, but without backlinks, you will not get much traffic. Other ways to promote your site are to write articles for submission, word of mouth, distributing business cards, e-mail blasts and optimizing your website.

Getting backlinks to you website are very important. Look at it this way, every backlink is like a vote for your website. Search Engines look at backlinks as a way of determining how popular your website is. The more backlinks increases the chances of being listed higher up in a search engine is much better.
One way links are the best for search engines. a one way link is created by writing a article, blog, squidoo lens, social bookmarking, someone likes your website and mentions it on their website or blog.
Two way links are not valued as much. Example: you find a website that is selling something like yours, you ask the webmaster if they want to trade links. They agree, and put your link on their website as long as you put their website link on yours.

Both things are equals b'coz traffic to your website that means more visitors comes to your websites, if more visitor visits your websites then make more money.... and backlinks.. backlinks is as important as traffic, more backlinks that means more traffic. that use in the link popularity.. backlinks helps to linkpopularity to your websites..... |

In my opinion, creating backlinks is also form of getting traffic to your website, but the idea is to work on creating backlinks and at the same time think of ways on how to attract people to visit your website. |

According to me both are impotent. As more sites links to your site that will become helpful for the promotion of site and if your site is well promoted then more sites will links to you. |
