I think the name of first search engine is Archives created in 1990 by Alan Emtage.

May be many of the members here still don't know the actual answer of this question. The first search engine designed was Archie, designed in 1990 by Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University in Montreal. The original purpose of the name was Archives, but it was shortened to Archie.
