Main Search Engines

A Search Engine<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

General interest search engine. Index contains about 5,000 carefully selected and frequently spidered sites offering products, services and information for the US market.

AltaVista

One of the original search engines, it was acclaimed for its powerful, relevant search results before Google overtook its throne. It tried to become a portal, failed at that endeavor, started a Google "killer" (Raging Search) that was shelved and then reverted to its search roots.

Amfibi

Search engine and Web directory lists sites from around the world. Offers free site submission and search in the languages of English, French, Spanish, and Catalan.

Ask Jeeves

Known as a natural language engine, users may search using entire phrases as opposed to only keywords. Its popularity is on the rise despite its documented financial struggles.

Babieca

Search engine, web directory and metasearch, featuring top searches on Babieca.

Direct Hit

Billed as a "popularity engine," it ranks relevancy by how many other sites like to a particular site related to a search. It was bought by Ask Jeeves.

Fast Search

Based in Norway, this search engine has a cult following similar to Google in its early days. It claims to have the "freshest" engine, updating its index every 10 days or so. Its performance is above average and is on the climb as opposed to many competing engines.

Google

Begun as a Stanford labs research project in 1997, Google has leapfrogged all its competitors to become the No. 1 search engine. Main features: Speed of searching, Google Toolbar, Google Groups, Google Directory

HotBot

Another early search engine known for its relevant results. It was acquired by Lycos, which never really did much with it, and has fallen on hard times of late. Its interface is convoluted, its directory is nothing more than a clone of the ODP, and its results are no longer as relevant.

Northern Light

A once-powerful search engine, it is still well regarded. It has recently expanded into a number of different areas like B2B, opt-in email, enterprise search and more.

PlayCity

Free Entertainment Search Engine where you can play free games, find music, humor, jokes, message board, find toys, search for clubs, get sports, find entertainment literature, search for computer games, buy games.
